Jaeger-LeCoultre Watch

    Hi all, I know nothing about watches, so would appreciate a little guidance. I have been left one of these watches by a relative,

    https://www.rubylane.com/item/1105910-EM5379/Vintage-1950x27s-Jaeger-LeCoultre-Day-Date?search=1

    It is in mint condition, even though it was used every day by my late Uncle since circa 1950. What I know is, it was bought on a trip to Switzerland and it's been serviced once. The questions I have are;

    1.) It has a 'newish' strap. Where would I go to get an authentic strap for it and possibly a genuine box for it? (I doubt I'll wear it daily)
    2) Where would I go to see if it needs another service & put an accurate value on it? Would a long established provincial Jeweller be up to it?
    3) I can change the time on it, but does anybody know how to fix the day, month, date on it?

    All info appreciated

    I'm afraid I have no idea re the day/date setting on it SPKP, but I just wanted to chime in with Wow. Nice.

    Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    Got it yesterday, put it on immediately and sauntered around Dublin with it today. Came home and after 15 minutes of Google, it's off and put away safely. Don't know if I'm the right guardian for it

    This is for a modern version, but it has the same functions so may be a help - there should be little buttons on the side of the case at 2, 4 & 8 o'clock for setting the calendar. You will probably need something to push these with, maybe something like a Nintendo DS stylus that won't cause scratches.

    And, to echo Wibb's comment, that is gorgeous!

    Will try that later, not wearing it today :)

    Thanks

    That looks like a very nice watch to have as an inheritance. I'd suggest you get some photos of your watch and post them on the vintage JLC forum; it's run by a very friendly chap called Zaf and he seems very helpful with newbies. I'm sure he will help to identify the model and calibre and may well have the relevant instructions to hand.

    I'm not sure I'd worry about getting an original JLC strap as you are likely to pay a minumum of double for a good exotic (e.g. alligator, croc or lizard) strap just for the benefit of having Jaeger LeCoultre embossed on the inside. Don't forget that a leather strap is a consumable and will need to be replaced again in the future. What would be nice is a genuine JLC buckle but getting the correct one for your model would require some luck and quite a bit of time camped on Ebay - there are also likely to be a few fakes out there so you'll need to be very well advised. Mention this if you decide to post on Zaf's site.

    In terms of boxes I'd keep an eye on Ebay. It will be almost impossible to be certain which type yours came in but you might find something you like. With a bit of patience you might even get a bargain but be under no illusions; these things are sometimes faked as well.

    I'm sure any jeweller will be able to value it but I'd have a search on Ebay and Chrono24 for similar models - this might help if you think the jeweller has under-valued it (and remember that just because somebody has an asking price of €xxxx it doesn't mean that it's worth that and will sell at that price though I accept this is probably less important if it's for insurance purposes). I'd be very careful on the servicing front and I would only use somebody that came with a recommendation and demonstrably has experience with this kind of mid-to-high-end vintage.

    I've just remembered that Camille Fournet make straps for JLC if you're still intent on the OEM route but still saving a bit of money. There are a couple of other alternatives discussed here:
