I think it's a scandal that our government are throwing us to the wolf's of insurance company's in this country , our so called insurance company's claim it's because of high claims and non insured drivers but it's the insurance companies themself's that the problem lies with , the biggest amount of claims seem to be settled on the steps for an exorbitant sum , and most young drivers are priced out of the market with sums as high as €60000 it's no longer possible for any young drivers to get insured , it would be nice to see the actual figure these companies are claiming to be losing.

If insurance companies were always losing money they wouldn't be in business.

I never believe that lie about losing money.

    Hey Boards,

    Looking for some advice.
I have a Full Irish Licence for over 2 years with a 2years NCB.
I am a 22 yr old student, my car (VW Polo 01) broke down just before Xmas and I decided to scrap it as it was too expensive to repair. I have been looking around for a small and low engine car. Called my insurance company today (for a Nissan Micra 11) and he said it would increase my premium by E189. I was already paying E1400-third party. I presumed the newer the car the lower my premium would be. I live rurally, my only option is to drive to college. Any advice on cheapest cars to insure? And is it possible to cancel my insurance policy to change company before the year is up? This car insurance and rising costs is bull****.

Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks.

I was watching the rte news recently and they were talking about motor insurance policies rising by up to 30% !. Even though I've been driving for nearly 20 claim-free years, mine has gone from around €400 to just under €1500, That's nearly 300% ! What gives ?

    You seem very confused.

Insurers are saying the increases are because of high claims which you seemingly disagree with, but in the next breath you say they are settling claims for exorbitant amounts, which is it?

There are lots of young drivers able to get quotes. Companies like Boxymo are specialists in young driver insurance. Just because a young fella cannot get insurance on a 95 Levin doesn't mean companies are not quoting on average cars.

Young drivers can get insurance nowadays a helluva lot cheaper than they could 15 to 20 years ago, I know many people that paid £3000 to £4000 punts for their first insurance in the mid to late 90s which would be up on €5000.

Nobody has ever been quoted €60000 for motor insurance on a standard car.

    Not even close.

In short, your post is nonsense.

They haven't always lost money, nobody has said that.

If you think that insurers don't lose money then why did Quinn Direct, Setanta and Enterprise insurance all go bust in the last 10 years?

You need to shop around and find better quote.

Cheapest I ever got down to was just over €500, currently its just over €700 with AIG - and class 2 too (business mileage)
