Just looking for advice for a friend, the company he works for has recently been taken over by a new company and the new boss has given them forms to fill in, asking questions such as, sexual orientation, religion, race

Are companies allowed to ask these questions? Religion and sexual orientation seems a bit personal to be asking

    Absolutely and definitely not.

They are afaik, in e.g. Northern Ireland they are obliged to report on the religious split of their staff.

It's how they use the information that's a problem not looking for it.

Apart from NI, it's often seen as foolish to ask.

But ... maybe the new company has support groups for certain minority groups, and is using this crude method of work out who to tell what what.

US Multinationals might have similar US statutory requirements to ask some of those questions and those queries might be asked, in error, here which has a differing level of personal data protection.

The company I work for (large primarily UK based with EU subs) ask similar questions. It's done as a diversity survey, I make a point of not answering most of them, apart from the religion side of things where I just take the piss. Legally does it matter about the context if you don't mind me asking OP?
