McAfee is about as useful as the BA mods.

/Apologies to any BA mod who may see this.

I wouldn't install that POS if you paid me. Let this post serve as a warning. DO NOT INSTALL. Insidious, bloated, hard to remove sludge.

This is not a bargain alert, it's a trap.

just as a rebuttal, sophos home edition is free all year round.. and thats not a bloated piece of crap.

To be brutally honest guys I couldnt give a fcuk what any of you think of it. No skin of my nose as they say as I only posted the details here in the hope that someone might be interested in it.

    Have a nice day.

Oh, the comment about the BA mods is immature, ill mannered and totally uncalled for to put it nicely.

I thought it was mildly amusing and anyone who is genuinely upset by it really needs to get some perspective.

McAfee is about as close to a scam as you can get, pre-loaded all over the place with a super special offer of a free period to sucker in the unwary, just put in your CC details in for registration there, we promise we won't charge you <until you have forgotten all about signing up in the first place>

A bargain is only a bargain if it is something with a value in the first place, this rubbish isn't. As above 100% free options that also work properly without clogging up systems are available.

Intel bought Mcafee in 2011 for 7.6 Billion and were meant to change the name to intel security in 2014 cuz of what john mcafee was getting up to at the time giving the brand a bit of a bad name, rename never happened though and now they're looking to sell 51% to TPG for 1.1 Billion. Valuing it at 4.2 Billion. Mcafee product made $182 million first half of 2016 up 11% on 2015.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-09-07/tpg-to-acquire-intel-s-mcafee-unit-in-4-2-billion-transaction

They really f*ked up buying it and then again not renaming it.

Most people mainly use browsers so blocking scripts and dodgy sites is the #1 defence. Flash and acrobat reader need so many security patches that you'd question if they are worth having. (why does a pdf reader need multimedia access ???)

For files Windows has it's own built in AV or go the nuclear option and hange over to something like Linux mint or BSD

    AVG http://www.avg.com/ww-en/free-antivirus-download
    Avast https://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
    Avira https://www.avira.com/en/free-antivirus-windows
    Sophos https://www.sophos.com/lp/sophos-home.aspx

Outdated AV may be worse than none because you get an false sense of security. And bad AV has lots of low level access to your system so if it can be attacked the bad guys have complete control.

Apart from viruses there's also malware. The difference is the antivirus vendors want more money to fix that too.

Bitdefender FTW. Even the free version will do the job better than this.

avast used to be great but its gone very poor in the last few months
its detection rate is almost non-existant for ransomware

    Bitdefender is the new King

Bitdefender have been man in the middiling your https traffic by using their own self issued security certificate.

Google Project Zero team have been digging into most (all) AV products over the last couple of years and they are all tragic. Damn near better off without any of them and just stick with Microsofts own yoke.

    Lookit,

Project Zero calls out Kaspersky AV for SSL interception practices
Symantec admits it won't patch 'catastrophic' security flaws until mid-July
SECURITY OUTFIT Symantec has warned customers that security flaws in the firm's systems outed by Google's Project Zero last month won't be fixed until mid-July.

Patches were rushed out to cover some of the "as bad as it gets" flaws identified by Project Zero, but patches to secure the fundamental architectural flaws are still some weeks away.

Windows Defender in Windows 10 along with Malwarebytes Free provides more than enough security for the average user these days. Nobody should be shelling out for the likes of McAfee or Norton antivirus these days. Complete waste of money.

got any links on where I can get those?

Windows Defender is built into Windows 10 so no need to download that.

Malwarebytes Free can be got from here:

    https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/

Havent used it for a while but as far as I know, there should be an option to opt out of the free trial of the premium version during installation. The free version doesn't scan in realtime so just run a manual scan once a month or so and bob's yer uncle.
