Hi Id like to hear from anyone who has installed timber sash windows in the last couple of years, Im pricing new windows for our old cottage and have had prices for both pvc and hardwood, I am leaning towards the timber but the only thing that's putting me off is the concern that it may expand and contract etc causing it to jam in the runners,
Anyone have recent timber windows installed? how are they after they settle in? any advice appreciated.
    Steve

Assuming the site is not 'coastline' exposed, How will the windows be fitted? can you post the window Cilli/jam/head detail? why would the timber be any worse than pvc assuming the supports/ope/insulation is ok?

Timber in general has a habit of expanding and contracting as moisture levels rise and fall, My front door is Iroko and even though its been treated/painted religiously it can jam from time to time depending on weather, Im not living in a coastline location, The suppliers have quoted me for removal and fitting.

have you look at aluclad? The biggest problem with timber is maintenance going forward.

Just check with your insurance company regarding the sash windows. Guy i work with has sash windows and he finds it hard to find a company to insure the house because of the windows.

Thanks for the heads up.. I hadn't thought of that. I assume the modern sash are as secure as other types but its something to keep in mind.
