Can i ask for more in salary?

    Hi,
I currently work at a great work place and i get 27k plus 1000 euro every quarter as bonus.
My workplace is however doing a re org so the role i have will no longer be there and they are trying to find a new role for me. Meanwhile i have had interviews with other companies as a back up if anything should happen.
Now i have a company that are keen to get me onboard but they have a basic salary of 26k with bonus opportunity up to 1100 monthly. Now i feel like you cant be 200% sure on bonuses so you can relay on the basic salary.

I feel that i dont wish to take a step back salary wise. I have a feeling that most of the same position starts off on this salary. I however have a long experience in this field and for me to change to that company i would want to see some higher numbers. Would it be rude to ask for a little bit more although they say that everyone starts on this basic salary and you can "work your way up".

And what would be a good way to ask for it?

Any help would be much appreciated!

I would say it is not worth losing any goodwill towards yourself by raising this now - work hard for 3 to 6 months then sit down with Manager and ask for an increase...just my opinion, not an expert view.

The easiest point to negotiate a pay rise is before you take a job. Once you're in, you will generally be stuck with the single digit percent pay rises along with every other employee.

Correct - how "sure" your bonus is will vary from company to company.

You can explain that you'd be taking a step down from current position if you took their offer. That however can't be your justification for the raise. You need to explain to them why you think you're worth the extra - anything *concrete* you can demonstrate your bring that will improve their business
    • X years experience meaning you've been able to do specific things better
    • Concrete instances where you've done well in current job - sales, projects completed successfully, awards, positive feedback from customers, etc. I'm not sure what kind of work you do.

As you say there may be a pretty fixed salary for this position but there's no harm in making your case.

If you get a hard no you could ask for a guaranteed salary review after specific period. No guarantee that they'd review it but at least it's scheduled in.
