is this par for the course in irish employment now?

Youth age 18 just finished working for six months with a well known phone sales store in a large shopping centre in Dublin. Works 9.30 to 6pm daily rostered hours. But asked to be in half an hour before opening to get shop ready and had to stay behind to 8.30pm for stocktaking and team meetings and is not paid for this and disciplined if he cannot do extra hours. Because he is the only full time person in the store he works every Saturday and Sunday but gets two days off during the week but not consecutive so never gets a two day time off period. No mamager in store available by phone but rarely takes calls. October bank holiday comes and hes told he is not needed for a week and he has to take his holidays (even though he has a permanent 40 hr contract per week subject to 6 months probation) so he does that took his 5 days leave but was not paid and his request to his manager was not actioned. Worked huge hours over Christmas period got sick on 27 December took one days leave got a sick cert from doctor handed it to his boss and his boss laughed out loud and said he made it up. Has exceeded targets every month and got huge target for Christmas and made the target looking forward to commission but laid off last monday for good and told no commissions payable because he was let go immediately and humiliated in front of part time colleagues in store. . Now this shower of crooks have themselves covered in their contract of course and we kow he has no employers rights until he is a year in the place and we all know its a employers market but I think its almost modern slavery. Would welcome feedback.

Maybe you could try and talk with the manager and get their side of the story. The line has been drawn though and under no circumstances will he get his job back. Otherwise just chalk it up to experience and move on.

Sorry to hear this but unfortunately this kind of thing happens a lot in retail. I was working in retail for years and found it soul destroying. I don't think there is much you can do. Sorry I can't contribute a more positive reply and I hope this terrible experience hasn't shattered the youngsters confidence.

Unless you've discussed the issue with them and can stand over your version of the events I wouldn't.

Exactly what date did he start and finish? And does it actually say in his contract he is on commission?
