    hi all,
have a week old calf with a bit of a cough, he is lively and drinking away, having to persuade the mother a bit. it sounds like a gurgle, and has had it since he was born, found him born in morning.
haven't had this before with one. seems to be worse when he is sucking or just after.

would he be coughing much? does he cough when sitting or just standing around or after running does he start it?
i find after they do a bit of jumping or running they tend to cough a little. also after suckling aswell id here them do a little coughing. not too much though.

seems to be mainly when up and about, sucking and after it, maybe the jumping about will help him get something up. he not coughing when he is resting. I suppose as long as he is lively and sucking away, he is grand, just don't recall hearing it from them before at this age, few weanling alright be coughing in the shed over the winter.

Start by checking his temp and make sure there is no underlying infection there.

I wonder has he something from calving that hasn't cleared from a lung and it's only affecting him when he's more active and needing more air ??

@Brian, ya was thinking that he hadn't cleared some fluid from birth as normally would snott it up., held him up by back ankles when we found him for a while, in effort to let gravity help, but nothing came. no temp but watching his navel as he was born on the slats.

Had a bull born 2 years ago and was coughing after a few days and would be a bit laboured when sucking. Brought him to the Vet and she said that there was fluid in his lungs from the calving. She gave him a couple of injections and one for me to give him after 2 days. He cleared up fine afterwards.

    a charolais.
thanks Base. I'll give vet a shout is it persists another day or 2, gave him a bit of hexasol last night to see if helps clear it.

Keep it into him. Five days. If you pussy foot around with a calf that young you'll regret it. He's not right, there's something wrong. A young calf hasn't the tolerance an older animal would have.
