Totally painless hole in gum!

I've noticed over the last while that I have a hole in my gum where my wisdom tooth should be. It's like the tooth was coming down but then forgot to finish it's journey. There's no pain, inflammation or swelling and the only reason I even noticed it was because some food got stuck there. I will make an appointment with a dentist, but I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas about what it might be related to, just so I'm prepared?

    Thanks!

Because I had braces I had to have my four wisdom teeth removed. One had cut right through but stopped, one had cut through but never grew (hole in the gum) and the top two never cut. When I had them removed the Surgeon said the ones that had cut through were the most difficult to remove. I had them removed and stitched up, two years later I still have a hole in the one that stopped coming up. I've been to my own dentist and orthodontist since and they say it's nothing to worry about.

You may need to have your tooth removed and stitched, it may be okay to leave as is :). Definitely go to your dentist and ask. But to have them removed (non private) costs a bomb.

Thanks to you both! All of my other wisdom teeth are down and haven't really caused any trouble, but I do recall my last dentist saying he wanted to take them all out anyway (while living abroad). I'm in the UK now and chances of finding a dentist on the NHS are slim to none, so it would definitely be great if it's something that doesn't need immediate attention! :D

it depends where in the UK you are. if you are in the south east/london, there should be no hassle.
