Heating controls upgrade?

Excuse my stupidity, but I've heard many times about the heating control upgrades that you get a grant for but I'm not entirely sure what they actually entail. How does this system differ from the bog standard version?

Currently I have oil central heating, and also a slack burner feeding into the same system. Both those burners are located in the garage.

In the house I have a box, one of these:

Which is where I turn the system on/off/timed etc.

When it comes on via timer or manually, it switches on the oil burner in the garage and the 2 pumps beside it. If I am going to use the coal burner I just turn the box to ON instead of TIMED, turn off the oil burner at the wall in the garage and turn on the coal burner instead. This keeps the pumps running but I have manually switched from oil to coal.

Is there an easier way of working this? I often knock the heat all off at night (back to timed via the box in the kitchen) and switch off the coal burner in the garage, but I forget to knock the oil back on at the wall in the garage so in the morning the timer just turns on the pumps but without any heat.

Also beside the timer/box there are 2 switches. One for the bedrooms and one for the living areas. Obviously for heating each area, or with both off it just heats the water. Do the heating control upgrades offer more control than that? At the minute I just have the radiator valves turned down in rooms that don't really need it, like the spare bedrooms etc.

Again apologies for the complete lack of knowledge in my post!
