Looking for some advice on an extraction.

    Hello,

I've only just become aware of this section of boards.ie.

I've never been particularly diligent where dental issues are concerned - not keeping them clean of course, just visiting dentists for check-ups and such, and attending to issues which obviously required the attention of a dentist. I'm a 34 year old man, and I've only visited a dental clinic once in my adult life. That was to have a loose supernumerary tooth removed a few years ago, before that I think I had a filling or two as a teenager (which might need replacing?).

I wouldn't go as far as to say that I'm dentist-phobic, but I'm certainly a little resistant to visiting them.

The trouble is I've developed an issue with my upper left third molar/wisdom tooth, and I've been ignoring it for a while, by which I mean at least two years. It doesn't taste or smell off, but it feels as if it has lost a significant bit of its mass, and look discoloured. I can't exactly see it clearly, but feeling it with my tongue, it seems like it needs an extraction.

As I know nothing about dentists and dental costs, I was wondering what that might entail? And if prices are variable, depending on where you go? (I live in Dublin city centre/Dublin 7, and don't qualify for a medical card).

    Thanks.

You could need a filling, an extraction, or a surgical extraction with an oral surgeon.
The only way of knowing is to go for a checkup& xrays.

Most working people qualify for a "free" checkup under PRSI. Simply phone the dental practice with your PPS number, which they can then email to the Dept of Social Welfare.

Ask for recommendations from friends or family members. Most practices have websites outlining costs also
