Split AC removal

Apologies if this is in the wrong section. Could be a DIY thread?

Looking for advice regarding the removal of a split type air conditioner. I have read online that you can trap the gas inside the outside unit by closing the smaller outlet valve and then turning on the AC until you hear the compressor stop running.
I've done this but I haven't noticed any changes in sound at all. How long is enough to ensure all the gas is out of the pipes? I let it run for about five minutes. I've left the inlet valve open for now.

Second question is what is the best way to dispose of these when the they are removed? Are there special companies who take these products for recycling?

    Thanks all.
