port forwarding

    Hi,

I want to establish a link to my home network over the net, using openVPN.
I need to port forward either 1194 or 443. My router is not very intuitive. It's a Huwaei HG658C and it does seem to provide the possibility of port forwarding.

After setting it to portforward , I checked it with: http://www.portchecktool.com/

    I get this response(ip address x'ed).

"Problem! I could not see your service on xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx on port (1194).
    Reason: Connection timed out. "

I also tried port 443 tcp , instead of udp 1194. No luck.

Is that telling me the port is closed ?

Setting up the ports should be possible irrespective of how I intend to use them ?

Does anybody know if Vodafone block use of their router for such access ?

I'm a puzzled noobie so far as port forwarding is concerned :(

    I've read this : http://deviceguides.vodafone.ie/web/vodafone-hg658c-windows-7/configuration/settings/set-up-port-forwarding

No great help . What protocol do i select from the sdrop down list ?

What is device is listening on that port?

Is there a firewall enabled on that device????

Can you place the device that is listening on that port in the DMZ (if available) for testing purposes to see if it can be hit from the outside??

You can login to the HG658c as superuser for some more options

    U/N: superuser
    P/W: HG-658c_VF_ie*

Opening ports is possible on Vodafone with the HG658c. Vodafone have 443 and possibly other ports reserved for their own access so if you use these, the router will prompt you to change their ports to something else

Setting the firewall to off might be required too

I used port forwarding for the PS4 on the hg658c. The link below might help

    https://portforward.com/huawei/hg658c/

    @ NoDrama -
The device is a Raspberry Pi Model 3 (RPi3) set up as in this tutorial : https://melgrubb.com/2016/12/11/rphs-v2-introduction/
No DMZ normally on the router. ( But is exposed to superuser - I now know)

@heroics, sat matt : Thanks for those pointers. I will investigate further.

The RPi3 is a fun board to play with :)

Just to add that there is DMZ under Advanced > NAT > DMZ... it's there when logged in as superuser anyway

I don't imagine you'll need to go the DMZ route, hopefully you'll be sorted with a few open ports
