What sort of money could I expect to pay for 12 month old Freisan bullocks?
They're nice and hairy and approximately 270kgs with a good frame (for a Freisan).

I'd say €400 would be plenty for them. I'd say they'll be a world of them for sale in a couple of months.

I hope dairy lads won't be expecting big money from exporters for friesians. Best time to get em out of the system is as calves.

Cork marts are after pulling out of the live export, the welfare crowd are making it harder every year.

If the price is right they'll be exported.

There are others in that business too although they may not be inclined to attend any of cork marts sales this spring.

They are a few specialists in the calf export sector (off the top of my head - Buitelaar, Hallissey, Scallan) who have been going a lot longer than Cork marts and long may they continue to do so.
Edit: I predicted (c.2 years ago) with the increase in dairy cow numbers that we may see a return to a Dept approved dairy calf cull like we had 20 years ago.

Thats the thing though, lads are willing to pay silly money for calves, we just accept it. Then they winge that they are making no money on them

When was that, it's very unlikely now....they even had to have their arms twisted to pay for PIs...different economy 20 years ago

The cull scheme was back in 2000 and a small up take in the factories at the time.

Yeah I think you'd need to, approximately 330 days to do 330kgs, 0.8kgs per day until mid Feb (45d x 0.8= 36kgd), 1.2kgs per day between mid Feb and mid June (120d x 1.2= 144kgs), 1kg per day between mid June and Oct (135d x 1= 135kgs), 1.4kgs per day from housing in Oct and finish mid Dec (80d x 1.4= 112kgs).
    Total gain= 36 + 144 + 135 + 112= 427kgs
Take away 20% for a springtime enthusiasm 340kgs of 2017 gain plus 270kgs current weight and you're at 610kgs, easy peasy!

How much meal from start to finish?

1 kg a head from now until mid Feb- 36kgd
2kgs a head for last week at grass- 14kgs
Build them up to 8kgs a head when housed - 500kgs.
    Total- 536kgs.

I think .8kg until mid Feb is a bit optimistic

I think you are being very optimistic you are assuming that the buyer can let them straight to grass in mid February. If he is very lightly stocked if stocked normally. As bullocks from now to mid October assume 200-220kgs. So those bullocks will be 480 isn't kgs. It is unlikely that anything Friesian's will kill 53% at less than 2 years at 600kgs. Other issue will be FS very hard to get Friesian's in FS 3 at less than 650 kgs. Killed a few bullocks over Christmas will not be feeding any more cattle for winter finishing. Cost is too high. Best Friesian's will do 1.2 kgs / day and that is on 8-10 kgs of ration and silage.

Young lad bought weanlings Friesian's 220kg 280 euro landed in the shed and in Late September 270. Kgs landed in the shed 355 euro. The September bought bulls are over 350 kgs now. Outwintered bullocks 270 kgs I say can be bought in the 400-450 bracket at present. You will buy 2 year old stores 400 kgs for 600 euro much better value

I have similar on kale and they're near this performance, I weighed them on Saturday and they're averaging 300kgs for Feb/Mar 2016.
I have put in the write down of 20% for Spring optimism so that'll bring it down to 0.64kgs... :-)
