    Hey guys,
How do you go about insuring a van for my own private use,?

I have no issue to tax it.

I work at a multi national software company at a desk so can't tell the insurance company it's for work.

But will be using the van for everyday use to pick up what iI need on the way home from work.
Can you get insurance for your own use on a berlingo.

So are you saying your current insurance is 'social and domestic' and doesn't cover your day to day work? And therefore it's not a company car?

    If so, don't change anything

Are you trying to insure the car to being home bits and pieces to the site? You're hardly going to be being anything that you need specialized insurance are you?

You call an insurance company and ask for a policy, you'll need social use, the motor tax will be on the old private cc basis as you won't qualify for commercial tax.

Get yourself an old vw golf car and let down the back seats. Almost as good as any van. My little golf was a lifesaver when we were building our house.

ETA and a tow bar. What more could you need?

Current provider (dont think I'm allowed say name), won't insure vans privately, is there insurance companies who will?

Looked at this, a 2011berlgo is the same price as a 2002 golf, so would prefer the younger option

OP: the thinking is a bit wooly here.

The proposed van is NOT for work: its for S&D so as stated earlier its just a normal insurance question for a van for S&D.

As you wont get the commercial tax rebate why bother?

If you try insure a van for private work, they will think you are self employed and the rates will be astro.

You seem to have a romantic notion about needing a van for a selfbuild.:D Is this an image thing for pulling birds in the pub or are you watching too much Dexter?:D

Get an estate car, e.g. an old volvo 240 or 850 and treat it as a van and as a disposable item just for the build

“I can’t pay my staff or mortgage with instagram likes”.

This post typifies everything that is wrong with Boards. If you've nothing to add to the OPs question why bother replying. What happens if the OP wants to but a washing machine for his new house. How will get that into the back of a Volvo? He has thought about what he wants. Came to a conclusion it's a van and now is enquiring about insurance, and you throw this nonsense at him.

OP. Just get commercial insurance that includes Social and Domestic and then tax is privately.

Also there is a car insurance sub forum in Motors where you'll get better answers.

In fairness, it's a van insurance question posted in a Building Regulations Sub forum!

The problem here is the insurance company. They will only offer commercial insurance to the person if their job title satisfies them that it's required. Then the OP has NCB issues when they want to change back to private.

I went through all this insuring my commercial crew cab but my job title allows for it. The guy from axa told me if I was office based they would not offer the policy.

The OP also has to sign a goods declaration witnessed by a Garda.

The Volvo estate is a better option that will hold more than one washing machine at a time.

Crew cabs are always notoriously difficult to tax and insure. Vans are a walk in the park in comparison. I was insured on a van and told them I worked in an engineering company. That was the only question they asked. They never asked what position or anything else. Crew Cabs are different and the main reason being you'll see loads of crew cabs parked up in Tesco car park driven by people who don't even work but are still on commercial tax and insurance.

Thanks for your opinion on a question I didn't ask,
I'm building a house so what has it to do with pulling birds, I'm obviously building with a partner....
Yes I could get a ball of sh1te but its an everyday vehicle, I drive 80km round trip min a day, and will prob be picking up anything i need on the way home from work, so i can get a bag of rubble that will need maintenance, or i can get a 2011 berlingo for 4500... I'll get the berlingo.

To the rest, it turns out Alliance are the only ones who insure a van for domestic use.
I worded it incorrectly in original post.
Not private use, i meant social use but after ringing 2 brokers and a few other insurance companies, they said they didnt do social and domestic insurance for a van, hence I asked here.I since asked Alliance, and they quoted me a reasonable quote and had no issues with me using it as every day use.

    Thanks all.

Get a berlingo multi space or a Peugeot partner tepee, take back seats out when you need it to be a van. Co2 tax and regular insurance.

Prob not as cheap as a van version to buy though

Axa commercial policy has a social and domestic add on too. I'm with them through 'insuremyvan'.

Strange alright. But as mentioned previously, mines a crewcab so maybe they have slightly different rules around them.
My job involves construction site visits maybe 60% of the working day. The rest I'm at a desk as a PAYE employee.

They are odd. I got a quote from insuremyvan for a small commercial van with myself as main driver and wife as named. I told them my profession was a computer programmer and my needs were that I had some goats and horses. Then I rang back again to check my wife as main driver and myself as named. Wouldn't quote as they said my wife being a secretary did not qualify for commercial insurance. I mentioned that they quoted me with her named and the smart arse on the other end of the phone said "sure we'd all love to have a commercial crew cab".
