BT Smart hub/ wireless network

I'm on a Vodafone fibre connection but I want to go fully wireless, I have the standard router that they were giving out a couple of years ago but I have upwards of 8-10 devices connected at the same time and I'm not massively happy with how it performs. We get good speed because we're right beside one of the cabinets/exchange. About 4 of these have wireless AC capabilities and are the priority for performance.

So I was looking at a nice cheap way of improving the wireless network. Two options at the moment would be:

    1. Get a new router with built in modem
    2. Get a better router and connect that to the current Vodafone router, pass through the LAN and just turn off

So obviously I could spend up and over a 100 quid on option 1&2 or my cheap alternative idea.

    1. Get an eircom F2000 (probably get one for under 40 second hand)
    2. BT Smart hubs are getting rave reviews, the 5 could be picked up for less than 20 GBP, I could create two separate networks one on the 2.4 and one on the 5. Maybe go a bit further and buy the newer hub.

One concern about option 2 is that you can't change DNS settings on the BT routers, so I would be stuck with their DNS, does anyone see an issue with this. Does anyone have a better idea?

    Cheers for any suggestions

Ok, just in case anyone tries the same thing, here's what I did in the end.

    1. Kept the same standard Vodafone router
    2. Paid 15 euro for homehub 5 secondhand
    3. Wireless AC adapter for my gaming PC
    4. Turned wireless off the Vodafone router/modem
    5. Turned DHCP off the BT router
    6. Put the BT outside Vodafone's DHCP range
    7. Connected them by LAN to LAN
    8. Created a 2.4 and 5 GHz network on the BT router

It has made the world if difference, my gaming PC has doubled it's downloads and I've been able to pull out homeplugs, wireless is much more stable. I've about 5 of my devices on the 5ghz network and the rest on the 2.4.

Recommend this if soemone wants better wi-fi speeds etc and stable network for streaming and only costs 15 quid.
