    Are there any paid options?
I think the free sites attract too many messers.

I every dating site has people who are on there for self-gratification. They just want you to tell you they are good looking or to absolute waffle.

The best tip for online dating I got was if you have a connection online and it goes well for 2/3 days ask to meet. If they say no or dont know, end conservation. They have no intention of ever meeting you. I know there is the whole "I want to make sure you arent a serial killer etc". But if you meet in a safe place like a bar or a cafe, there is no risk and they are fishing for another excuse.

If they agree to meet and bail on your date and dont try to set up another time to meet then. They are likely a time waster too

If you enforce agree to meet within 2/3 days of talking and ending conversation if they don't. You will honestly cut out 98% of time wasters IMO.

Someone for a long-term relationship or casual dating/hook-up? That makes a lot of difference to the answer!

POF is more geared towards relationships.

As regards the issue of paying, it's not pay-for-use per se, but you have to pay to access certain features. Most users don't pay.
