looking for a reputable breeder

Hi all. I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. My wife and i are looking to buy a basset hound pup. Our last one passed away last year after 12 years of great companionship. We were absolutely devastated but have only recently come around to the idea of getting a new one. I contacted the name given via the IKC website but i got no response at all. Are there any basset owners here who could pm me a name or names of honest reputable breeders? I don't want to go down the done deal route. Thanks in advance. .

There is nothing wrong with the "done deal route", as you put it, if you do your homework. If you see a dog on donedeal, visit the puppy's home, see its parents ... I don't really see what more you could need!

Extensive genetic health testing on both parents to be shown, proof of the puppy's vaccinations, treatments for fleas and worms, their microchip, their registration with the IKC, a guarantee that the puppies were not just brought into the house from a shed when they knew you were coming?
People who do all of the above as well as take into account the high vet bills of their pregnant dog will not be able to sell their pups at the prices you usually see on DoneDeal.

You can go on donedeal and buy the cheapest of the cheap or you can do your research and buy from one of the many reputable breeders who use donedeal.
I'm saying this as someone who recently bought two sisters off of donedeal. We got everything on your above list (bar the genetic testing) and they were by no means cheap.

You bought two sisters from the same litter and think you bought from a reputable breeder? A high price without genetic testing is someone selling for pure profit rather than to recoup the costs associated with breeding properly.
    I'll leave it at that.

We bought two sisters because we fell in love with both of them. I don't see a problem with that. They are for pets not for breeding. What's the issue?

The extensive amount of threads on here alone constantly warning of littermate syndrome? In fact I think it was mere days ago someone was warned to wait roughly a year before getting a second dog.

Well as someone who has had dogs my whole life I have to say that's a new one for me! Not being argumentative I never heard of it before. They are wonderful together as of yet anyway.
My point to the OP was that there are reputable breeders, along with plenty of scroates, on donedeal but it is up to the buyer to be aware.

Hopefully it's not something you encounter then, because I imagine they ain't going anywhere now :p
There were a few threads on here before about attempting to combat it. Basically, they completely bond to each other and not to either owner and can become impossible to train in any aspect and can not be separated and can even become aggressive toward each other :(

As to the OPs request, does it have to be an IKC registered puppy? I've seen quite a few juvenile bassets go through rescue recently? I couldn't help on the breeder front, my husband's best mate had two IKC registered bassets but they were both bought 14 years ago from two different breeders :o

No I'm sorry, but there are no reputable breeders selling on donedeal, there are breeders yes, but not reputable ones, who do all that has been said, the genetic testing and more.

I hope that your two have a long and happy life with you and your family, but you can't come on here and post about new pups without putting photos up. :)

They're going to suffer terribly from littermate syndrome. It might be best you give me one of them to be safe.
Or both. You could give me both.

Sorry OP, totally derailing your thread :pac:

    They are gorgeous.

Aren't they just beautiful? Big smushed up face. We've always had boxers, even before they became the must have fashion accessory for the local scroates!!!
Sorry OP I'll whisht up now.

Your grand folks...didn't mean to potentially cause ww3 here! I'm just wary of the whole puppy farm thing and also i want my pup to be as healthy as is possible and i just feel that going through a breeder who knows the ins and outs of bassets is the best route for me. I'm still struggling here to find a breeder though. I emailed the secretary of the club again and hopefully he might respond.

I know you said a pup but I know of a rescue with a couple of adults, if you can't find a pup and decided to go that way.

Gotta say; with a breed with as many potential issues as a Bassett I'd avoid DD like the plague. I'd imagine any decent breeders wouldn't need to advertise. Maybe go along to some shows and enquire there.

Can i ask what age would the adult bassets at that rescue be?

I'm afraid I don't know, It's not a breed I'd be interested in myself so I didn't pay much attention.
