Thermostats

Because of a health condition I always feel cold. Neither my hubby or myself have a clue regarding the heating. We put thermostats on all rads about 20 years ago to hopefully save money on the heating. Two years ago we had a new rad put into the attic room but didn't get a thermostat on it. If I could, I would live in the attic it is so hot up there. The rest of the house doesn't feel warm enough and I usually sit with a blanket over me watching tv 'cos I shiver all winter long. I was wondering if we took the thermostats off all the downstairs rads will they be hotter, as the hottest setting on them is just not keeping me warm at all. I know heat rises, but I never thought the attic would be this hot, I love it up there and would love the whole house to be that way. Hope for some advice.

Lets stick with one rad for now. Is the rad in the TV room too hot to keep your hand on? After being on for an hour is it same temperature center top and center bottom?

I think you attic is warm because of the insulation in the attic. Are the radiators warm they may need bleeding, you may have air in the rads?.The other problem you and lots of people have is the downstairs insulation may not be that good or your windows may need replacing.Try bleeding the rads it's not such a big job and there is lots of advice on YouTube on the method. You will get lots of better advice here than I'm giving you but that's my pennies worth good luck in your adventure

Its very warm but couldn't be called hot! Cooler at the bottom.

They probably need bleeding. We have never been successful in bleeding them. One rad in a small bedroom never comes on either even though we have bled it. We are such numpties at household maintenance unfortunately.

Turn off 60/70% of the rads and see if there is an improvement in temperature in that one.

Unless the thermostatic valves are sticking, removing the valves or heads will not make any improvement. (assuming its turned on fully)
