Got Married in April 2016

What do I need to do tax wise?

I work in public sector- residential unit for people with disabilities. I work part time (86 hrs per month) but I take on extra shifts as and when I can, basically when suits childcare etc. So on average I would work 110-120 hours per month. I pay USC, Paye and pension levy. I also get unsocial hours/ allowance for weekend and shift work.

My husband works in private sector as an engineer. He pays USC and Paye

Wage wise he comes out with slightly more after tax as my wages fluctuate month to month depending on when I can take extra shifts.

I phoned revenue after we married and they weren't much help, they just said it won't matter til this year, 2017. At no point was I asked if we should be assessed jointly or separately? Can anyone offer advice based on the above?

I should add I am on maternity leave now until June, not sure how this will impact the above.

    Any advice welcome

You haven't given any figures to calculate what's best for you but in general it's easier to opt for joint assessment with the main earner listed as the assessable spouse. Leave rate band and credits split 50/50 and request a review online at the end of every tax year going forward. You'll need to also ask for a year of marriage review for 2016
