Digital Set Top Box, advice please

I purchased a second hand echostar box for my free to air sat dish.
It will only pick up the BBC channels and a few rubbish ones of course, but no itv channel 4, travel channel , more 4, etc etc would this be a setting ? Or is the box too old or something?

Try a factory reset and re-tune again

No, it's more pre historic, I would say 10-15 years old. Can't find any option for a factory re set....

The Freesat+ box was launched about 6 years ago. My brother has one, I posted this about 6 months ago with a similar issue. No replies.

Did some online research and there appears to be an issue with this now discontinued box.

My brother found the firmware through one of those links, installed it and it appears to have resolved his problem.

NOTE: My brother emailed EchoStar about the issue but never received a reply.

Hi thanks for the detailed response. I looked at the box and it has a 2004 date on it, so no USB port on it, but you did get me thinking that it must be a software issue!. I don't know can you update those boxes?. I might try and ring echostar and see what they say. I did try everysetting I could find on it at the weekend and nothing.....

If it is a very old box chances are that the list of transponders (the groups of channels) is way out of date. If there is an option to do a 'blind / network' scan that should find everything. If not you may have to manually enter the transponder details and scan each one in turn. Needless to say this is incredibly tedious. If it's really old it may not support the newer DVB-S2 format which will also rule out a lot of channels.

This site lists all the free to air channels in this format across the top of each paragraph.

10714.25 H 41 U.K. DVB-S QPSK 22000 5/6

This example is the Channel4 group.

This means a frequency of 10714 (some boxes show it as 10.714) ignore the point 25.
H is for horizontal polarity others will be V for vertical
DVB-S is the transmission standard others will be DVB-S2
QPSK is also a part of the transmission format others may say 8PSK
22000 is also a part of the transmission format others may say 27500
5/6 is also a part of the transmission format others may say 2/3 or 3/4
