Hair felt underlay

We are currently sourcing carpet for our new build. We went to all the usual shops who told us about the great sales they had. We picked an expensive option and a cheaper option and then got talking underlay. They were asking for €13-€15 per square metre for underlay as we have underfloor heating. This was more expensive than our cheaper option carpet. Having researched underlay online, I see it can be bought for a fraction of the price but the shops say that they won't fit their carpet on underlay that i provide and we lose the warranty if their fitters don't fit it.

We stumbled across a shop that stocks the exact expensive carpet we were looking at elsewhere. He will supply carpet, underlay and fit for a less than half of what the other shop will. The carpet is legitimate. He is in business for years. I knew of him doing furniture but didn't realise he did carpet. The one potential issue that I see is that he uses 'Hair Felt Underlay'. He swears by it and says it is perfect on underfloor heating. I can't find any details about hair felt underlay online so I'm just wondering if anybody here know anything about it. He was unsure of the tog value but was adamant it suited underfloor. So much so that he said he would take a deposit of a few hundred euro and fit 125sqm of carpet. We could then pay him once we were happy with everything

Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

This is a tricky one without knowing the exact products, I'll give it a shot though. Hair felt underlay would usually have a high tog rating, the one we use is an 11mm underlay and has a tog rating of 2.5, kinda unsuitable for underfloor heating systems considering most customers come to us looking to get the overall tog rating(including carpet) under 2.

The one we currently recommend is a product called Thermaflow Impact, its a rubber underlay with a tog rating of 0.79. Its available to the vast majority of non group based flooring retailers, I can sent you on the suppliers name if you need it.

Thanks so much. I'll have a look before troubling you again. Sorry for the delay in replying. New to the system.
