i was visiting a friends house over Christmas and noticed channels 141 and 142 were BBC1 HD & BBC2 HD respectively.

My sky box has BBC2 HD on 143 and BBC 1HD further on up nearer the BBC4 channel - cant remember the exact number

My question is this: How is this possible - is it to do with the skybox? the
subscription my friend has or is it something that can be done manually?

Do you have a HD subscription?

i dont - but he has sky sports and sky movies - he may also have a HD subscription - I'm not sure
    That could be the answer?

Yes, a HD subscription places some HD channels on the number the SD version occupies on a non HD sub and vice versa. There are some exceptions to this however. Some channels prefer to leave them alone in Ireland for advertising reasons.
