Would Irish Radio stations play Irish music if they didn't have to?

As far as I am aware it is one of the conditions of most commercial radio stations license's that they play a certain percentage of Irish music.
Many of the stations 'get around' this requirement by playing more Irish content overnight or in specialist shows and the interpretation of what is Irish is fairly loose too and can include any musician who has recorded material in Ireland right through to tracks which include what is regarded as a traditional Irish music instrument (e.g the uilleann pipes/tin whistle on My heart will go on - Celine Dion)

What would happen if this requirement were removed? Would we hear less Irish music on air? I think so.

It's the reason why u2 were played weekly on Today fms Friday Night 80s. Personally I would be in favour of massive radio deregulation in this country, the system thats there is not fit for purpose and it's causing radio to slowly but surely die out in this country

True - it came to mind before Christmas when some rural TD was flying a kite about enforcing a higher percentage of 'needle time' for Irish music on Irish radio stations.
I think a higher percentage requirement would cause listeners to switch off in droves. As it stands its easy to spot the 'token Irish songs' when played -= they stick out like a sore thumb particularly on the youth stations.

Considering a lot of it is made up of extremely spurious claims to popular music (One Direction, Girls Aloud, The Wanted etc - when popular - due to one member; Irish ancestry like Ed Sheeran or even Faithless at a push) I doubt you'd see much of a drop on any CHR station. Rural ILRs play plenty of country & Irish as it stands.

Classic/specialist formats of any kind would see a major change I'd think. A lot less U2/Thin Lizzy/Cranberries on Q102/4FM/Nova!

We're very lucky to have a huge pool of Irish musicians.
And yes they would play irish music if they did not have to.

I actually liked it when RnaG could not play any english language songs. You'd hear all sorts of worldwide music in different languages. Most educational
