Resignation while on Maternity Leave

    I'm due to go on maternity leave (26 weeks) in a few weeks time. I don't get paid by my company while off - I just claim the state benefit which comes directly to me.
    I may look to interview for other jobs while on maternity leave.
    Question, can I hand in my notice while off? I'm on 6 months notice as it's a fairly senior post.
    Say if I hand in my notice after 3 months of mat leave, can the 6 months notice start from then and can I still take the extended mat leave (16 weeks) and use accrued holidays and bank holidays all while I'm serving my notice?

    Short answer is yes. If you're intending to use the accrued holidays and add them onto the end of your maternity leave, note that once you've given notice the company can refuse to let you do this and just pay you for them instead. So you should calculate your notice so that the last day of your extended maternity leave is your last day of employment.

    I'd hold off if I was you , look around for a new job. But if you can't get one and you plan to return to work you could be left without a job.

    I know they are unrelated in a way but it amazes me that a company that requires 6 months notice for senior positions doesnt pay mat leave.

    talk about wanting it all your own way!

    I know!! I relocated with the company from the UK and they were good to me at the time. I didn't want to push it by getting mat pay included in the contract as they don't pay it in the UK and I was quite clearly moving back to get married and have a family!!
