    Hi all,

First time poster, longer time reader,ha...

Just wondering has anyone every used either of the Cleveland Smart Sole 2.0 clubs, the chipper or the sand wedge. I have recently started playing golf again after a 10 absence. Struggled initially as I was quite decent when I was a teenager and it was frustrating not being anywhere near that level for a long time. But I bit the bullet, got a few lessons and now I am hitting the ball reasonably well and consistent. The biggest let down in my game is the 20/30 yards in and around the green, its costing me 5-8 shots per round. I shot an 84 gross at the weekend but I hacked 3 chips straight through the green, one of them into a water hazard on the far side!!!! The last 2 months or so I have been generally shooting sub 90 gross anytime I go out but as I said previously leaving too many shots out there. I was doing some research online and came across these wedges, they have got some good reviews but it would be nice to hear from someone on hear if they have had any first hand experience with them.

The usual reason for over-hitting a short wedge shot is from 'blading' it. i.e. hitting a bit fat and bouncing the sole off the turf to impact the ball with the leading edge rather than catching the ball with the face of the club. Or just coming straight in on the ball with the leading edge without the bounce. This is especially a problem on tight lies on the fairway or on the fringe.

I've found the best way to deal with this is to concentrate on almost using a putting stroke and just swinging the shoulders rather than the hip/body turn that you normally use, keeping your arms straight. This is for the short chips in and around the green where you just need to get the ball to go up to thirty yards or so.

Depending on the circumstances, you can use a lob wedge to carry an obstruction or a longer wedge or short iron to bump and run.

Thanks for the advice CMOTDibbler. Played two rounds over the weekend, using my pitching wedge from 30 yards in, just practicing some bump and run shots, took a few holes to get my distances right, but definitely was hitting the ball more consistently. didn't hit any fat shots around the green, first time coming off after 18 holes that I can say that...

Glad to help. I was that soldier and it's terribly frustrating. Very seldom have that problem now and if I do, it's usually down to a lapse in concentration. At the weekend I had two beauties where I chipped in on one hole and on another long and difficult green chipped the ball to six inches with a pitching wedge from about thirty yards. You'll get to trust those shots to get you close to the hole if you miss the green with an approach.

It'll be a bit tougher in the summer with tighter lies, but if you get the process right now, it will stand to you when the weather is better.
