Looking for the most wife friendly (and something that i wont be forever tinkering with) alternative to sky, ideally with saorview and free satellite channels on the same listing, EPG and recording functions,

happy to pay a few quid more for something 'polished'

It has no terrestrial tuner so won't get Saorview. Also it is not Freesat compatible. It will pick up the channels on Freesat for sure but no good for a 7 day EPG and channels will have to be retuned regularly. For some that isn't an issue but there are loads who wouldn't have a clue how to do it.

I picked up one of these recently....

    http://www.freetv.ie/combo-box/

It works fine, all HD channels output in HD(my previous combi box, an MVision wouldn't show certain HD channels at all) etc....but I have to say...the remote control is absolute sh1te and quite often takes several presses on the buttons to get it to work...

However, you get what you pay for and for €50 or thereabouts, it'll do...

There is no Saorview/Freesat combi box, although one was touted as coming.

But there are Saorview/FTA combi boxes, a different beast.

Most popular combo in Ireland for the last few years has been the Ariva 153.
