    Hi all,
I've been asked to look at a few odd jobs for my sisters second hand house.
My sisters house has a staircase that creaks. The newel post is loose and the handrail/baluster's move along with the newel. The steps also creak.
Is there any advice on how to fix this?
There are also plenty of creaking floor boards.....I've yet to take up the carpet and see whats under.

Will you be doing the remedial work required??

I'll probably have a look at the stairs newel post to see if I can get some screws into tighten it to the bottom step for example. Maybe put in a handrail bracket against the wall.
However, ideally, I'd like to get a good carpenter. There is a few tasks that need addressing.

If you could get some Polyurethane glue into the joint where the thread and newel post are joined it would tighten it up, brown Gorilla glue is the most common brand of polyurethane glue, just follow the instructions if you are not familiar with it and use a syringe or thin stick to get it into the joint, the same goes with the rest of the stairs, if it's creaking, then the wood is moving and glue is the best way to stop it.

You need to ascertain first.... why the newel is loose.

Is its attachment to the string...riser and tread ...loose,
    or all 3 attachments.

And believe it or not, re fixing that, wont necessarily fix it,

As good stair construction and fitting...........also includes securing the bottom of the
    newel.............to good old terra firma:D

And thats not always the case in Ireland unfortunately. More like

fek it there, and steel nail the other string to the wall:eek:
