Chimney repairs

    Hi all,

I'm having an issue with dampness in one upstairs bedroom. I recently had a new roof installed (old roof was in poor condition and had no felt underneath the tiles) but the dampness is still appearing. At the time, the roofer had mentioned there were cracks in the chimney so this would appear to be the cause of the leak. I've been quoted a price of €2K to have the roof repaired. This involves scaffolding, stripping the chimney brickwork, sealing the cavities and re-plastering it. Does this seem reasonable? It's in the Cork city area. Thanks all.

Have you checked the concrete capping pad on top of the chimney?
They usually crack and the water runs down the outside of the flue, inside the stack and pops off at the bend in the flue.
The price seems reasonable enough as scaffold these day is pricey, a grand may not even get them out of bed, however I question the description of the work.
    Stripping the chimney brickwork?
    Plastered brick work?
    What cavities?

Scaffoldings probably not even tagged at the price.
