Typing the degree symbol in Windows?

I want to be able to type the degree symbol on my Windows 10 computer.

By degree symbol I mean the small circle you place upper-right next to a number to indicate anything between 0 and 360 degrees on a compass.

A quick Google says that I must type Alt plus 0176 or Alt plus 248.

But, my keyboard doesn't have 1-0 on the right hand side of the keyboard. It only has numbers running 1-0 across the top, and these don't seem to work.

    Or should they work?

    Thanks.

    D.

Hold down the Alt key and on the numeric keypad on the right of the keyboard, type 0176, or Alt+ 248 When you release the Alt Key, a ° should be there

You can also use the "character map" tool in windows.

If you're in word, it's insert - symbol.

    Shortcut here is:

Windows Key + R (opens the Run... box)

    Type charmap and hit Return.

Then you just have to find the symbol you want and copy and paste it in.

    Brilliant!

    Thanks Seamus! ;)

Though it would be easier if I had one of those keyboards with a numeric pad on the right hand side.

Opening that character map is a bit long-winded.

That said, the choice of characters there is huge.

    Thanks again.

Every time I have to do something like this, I convince myself I can remember the Alt code for a symbol. I never do :D

Unless you're doing something which requires the symbol on a daily basis, you'll never remember the alt code for anything.

At least with the charmap, it also shows you the Alt code. So if you are going to be using the symbol a lot today, you don't have to keep going back to the charmap, you'll be well able to remember the Alt code for the duration of the document.

I needed the degree symbol for something recently, so I just used typed an uppercase O, selected it and used the Superscript feature in Word. Looked fine to me. ;)
