Saorview Help

    Hello,

I'm sure this has been asked / discussed before. I've searched and can find bits, but nothing that answers exactly the queries that I have so if anyone in the know can help, it'd be great.

Virgin customer, now cutting the cord and keeping just Virgin broadband. I'm based in South West Dublin.

My TV is Saorview-ready ( I think ). Am I correct in thinking that now all I require is an aerial to access RTE etc? Does anyone know if an indoor only aerial is likely to work in this area and, if so, what would be recommended as reliable? I'd likely install in the attic. I won't be getting a dish.

A attic aerial will likely work in your area for Saorview reception. I previously had a small indoor aerial, like this, work for analogue reception in Tallaght without a problem, screwed to the ridge board.

Coverage will likely be from Kippure - https://www.saorview.ie/en/get/coverage

    Many thanks.

I've had it confirmed that my TV is Saorview-ready so an indoor attic aerial is my next step.

I've noticed it mentioned in many threads that people have installed their aerials pointed in specific directions to receive certain transmitter signals. Is there much significance to this and can anyone offer advice or suggest an installation tutorial video for how to position and direct the aerial? I have located the coax in the attic and was going to mount it to a beam/gable and then connect.

I've attached Transmitter info from the Saorview site which relates to my rough location.

Also, I noticed this http://www.rtenl.ie/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/SAORVIEW-Frequencies-Rev-1.0.pdf in a previous thread and wonder how it relates to how I install.

It's simply a matter of connecting the aerial to the cable, mounting it and pointing the front of the aerial in the direction indicated from that map on the saorview website I.e. The black line from your location to the transmitter.

Sigh. So, I'm back to square one. Before going to purchase an aerial, as a test I connected a coax from my Smart TV to the wall connection and lo and behold there are 15 Irish and UK FTA channels coming through - though the reception on some is exceptionally poor. This is without STB, aerial or dish. I pressed the guide function and an EPG menu is there, but not populated with any detail at all. Some googling reveals that Samsung appear to have discontinued their EPG function some time in 2015, due to a licensing issue with Rovi. The TV manual tells me there is an ON TV app in the SmartHub that performs the same function, but that doesn't appear to be there either. So, my questions now are:

    1. To obtain EPG do I now require an STB (plus aerial?) even though my TV is Saorview-ready (because the manufacturer discontinued EPG)? As in, an aerial alone won't sort the EPG issue?

    2. How is it that I am picking up the UK channels without a combi box and/or dish?

    3. Given that the UK FTA channels are present without STB and dish, if I get a combi box (plus aerial) is it likely I'll still pick these up through the box without a dish?

What you are picking up there is analogue Virgin Media.

What you are picking up there is analogue Virgin Media.

Thanks. I had figured that, but also thought the analogue system was switched off

Virgin hasn't turned off their Analog service yet...their MMDS service has which is a different system...

Your tv will not populate an epg for an analog service. It will populate an epg for Saorview

I am hopeful that will happen, but I am doubtful given what I've read on various forums having searched 'Samsung Smart TV' & 'EPG'.

    Thanks again.

I install saorview and so I can assure you almost all Samsung TVs made in the last number of years will give a guide no problem on saorview once they are saorview compatible..Typing in your model no into Google will confirm if it has mpeg4 for saorview and Mheg5 for EPG and teletext
    ....

All Samsung smarts will definitely have this feature

    Nice one.

I've already had it confirmed by Samsung tech help that the TV is Saorview ready (no need for STB). A search of the Samsung site shows me that MHEG4 is supported for my model .

I'll be picking up this aerial this evening and installing it in the attic.

    Thanks again.

For those interested; the aerial I posted above provides perfect reception for Saorview channels. EPG works on the Smart TV model I have. I don't have it pointed at any direction and it works no matter what way I move it

Only issue was that, while I located the coax in the attic, I couldn't find an in/out box, just a cable from one side of the attic to the other and on each side it disappears into the wall. Difficult to tell which direction is out and which is in.

For now I have the aerial concealed behind the TVbut it is not aesthetically ideal so am considering getting an indoor aerial.
