My Bichon is 2 in March. I have to work for approx 6 hours a day for 4 days a week and he gets very lonely and untrusting. I want to get him a companion - any suggestions?

How about fostering from a rescue in your area with a view to adopt? They could possibly pair you with another dog who may be a suitable addition. Fostering allows you to essentially see how it works out for both you and your current dog, if it doesn't work out or you don't feel a connection, no harm has been done.
