Annual Leave Question

    I don't get annual leave 100%. Is that the total amount of days you can take off per year on top off summer or Christmas, or is the number all you can take.

    In the company my dad works for, they get 2 weeks at Christmas, 2 weeks during the summer. If they wan't any additional time off they can have it. If you choose to work over the summer and christmas you get paid on the double. (Holiday pay + wages)

    So if you have 28 days, and take 2 weeks at christmas and summer is that all you AL used up ?

    The way I see it 2 weeks in summer would be 10 working days (assuming it doesn't include a bank holiday) and 2 weeks at Christmas would be 7 working days when you take Christmas Day, Stephens Day and New Year's Day into account so would account for 17 days annual leave in total.

    Two weeks in summer and two weeks in winter would make up 20 days, not 28 (4 weeks x 5 days).

    Companies can give as many holidays as they want, as long as they are above the legal minimum. Which is about 20 days per year for full time employees plus bank holidays. Though most companies will give 21 as the minimum.

    If you are a part time employee it's 8% of your hours worked.

    Holidays are also given at the discretion of the employer, on other words you can't just dictate when you want them.

    Ninja edit: as said above, take away three days from the 20 if you have taken the holidays during the Christmas period where the 24th /25th Dec and 1st Jan fall.

    But the thing not touched on here is they can't pay for the holidays not to be taken as you hint at OP; they can't pay someone double for the two weeks of vacation in the summer and only give you 2 weeks off at Christmas as this would be breaking the law.
