Not particularly irish but anything on hudson taylor and isabel kuhn in china. taylor opened up the country with no backing from home.
kuhn worked among the lisu of yunnan.

books by grattan guinness are worth reading on the opening up of china. Guinness has an obvious irish connection.

cable & french and their work in mongolia.

    livingstone in Africa.

I grew up on these and they shaped my life. It enabled me to Asia for 6 months with only enough funds for 3. I still question why people are always looking for money when they tell me God is sending them them to the mission field. I wonder if God is calling them or is it they just dont believe He can supply ALL their needs without them having to ask anyone.

I'd recommend as a light read How the Irish Saved Civilisation by T. Cahill, which AFAIR recounts Irish Missionary efforts during the early Medieval Period.

He isn't everyone's cup of tea, but Tim Pat Coogan wrote a book about the Irish diaspora, "Wherever Green is Worn". It includes some details on missionaries in Africa and Asia.

Here's on on Taylor. with the involvement of the Guinness family it has obvious irish links.

Thinking about these is making me want to dig out my collection. A lot would be out of print at this stage.

I had one called "The Red Laquered Gate" about the Columban Fathers in China. Excellent.
