I was getting €180 from a tillage farmer who was growing beet and barley. Other folk in area were getting €200.

I suppose it depends on a number of factors. How well you know the farmer / how much you need the few boob / how good is he in looking after the land etc.

My tenant was with me for 4 yrs. I had just moved in and was starting out sheep farming so I was happy to start small. Every year I said that this would probably be the last year and he sweet talked me into another year.

One year I put up a fence over winter to add 4 more acres of grass as my flock was expanding / at this stage I hadn't agreed to continue to letting out. He didn't like this and this shocked me! I then decided that he was definitely in his last year with the remaining 12 acres. When he left - he left in a bit of a huff. I never reneged on any agreements but over the years I felt like I was losing my grip and from now on I will be much more cautious about letting out land long term...

People can be funny when they are in a place for a few years

He was even claiming sfp without ever asking me

    Thanks for the detailed reply,

yes people can be funny alright after having been there for sometime, on occasion I will go one year and not have him on it I will do silage on it or something like that so that he does not get so used to being there

as you said yourself you never went back on a promise or broke an agreement yet he still left in a huff I am mindful of that myself I am only charging a 100 euro an acre I am on the west coast ground is good has been used for silage over the years I think I will have to increase the rent this year if you were getting 180 euro an acre I know that people do pay more for tillage but I am beginning to think I have been too cheap thanks again

Where is the other poster. Ground on the west coast is in general much cheaper to rent than say ground in a tillage or dairy area in Munster or Leinster. A call to an auctioneer in the area will tell you all.

Yes ask local auctioneer land has different prices the same as houses depending on area land type
and demand in the area example land is making from 40 to 200 an acre around where i live in kerry depending of land type entitlements area etc.
