lads disappointed this morning to see one of my best cows had calved unexpectedly last night, calf not due till 10th feb and was dead on slats, fully formed but small obviously whether it was born dead or not i dont know, its some sickener, she seems a bit lame whether she got knocked or what the hell happened. cow has bagged up small bit and is looking for calf, wondering if i should get a calf for her or will she come on in milk as if she had calved normally? i wouldnt bother but she is a massive cow and if she hasnt a calf on her she will turn into a block of meat.

First thing id be getting sorted is a post mortem on calf to rule out lepto or the likes which could ruin your herd. She probably will come to milk but not to the extent she should but you would want to be getting a calf on her asap. If it was me i would let her off in a month or 6weeks after a bit of feeding.

she is a pb charolais, she is a fair good cow now and i wouldnt like to let her go, ya was going to get the vet to blood her (cow) but hadnt considered a post mortem on calf, i lost another calf similarly last aug, I had never lost calves this way previously which is suspicious but he blooded that cow at the time and 3 or 4 of her comrades that were also close to calving and all came back clear, i did let the stock bull into this shed the other day which is the only change lately
