Engagement Ring - Location of Shop and Haggling

    Hey,

Myself and my girlfriend went shopping for a ring today in Dublin. She really liked two rings in a shop on Grafton St. We've decided to sleep on it before she decided on which ring to pick.

    However, I have two questions:

How much should I expect to be able to haggle the shop down from the listed price? I have 20% discount in mind for some reason.

I'm in no rush, however she seems to be. Would it not make sense to take our time and have a look at shops further afield like Limerick or Belfast to see if we can get better value?

I can just about afford the grafton street rings at the listed price and at the end of the day if it's what she wants we should just go for it. But I think it's a big decision to make after one day of looking and I don't want to be taken for a mug on the price.

I am heading myself to pick a ring with my girlfriend tomorrow and will expect some discount but unsure how much. Also i want to reserve the item and pay it off upfront monthly if anyone has any experience with this?

I would say 20% seems a bit ambitious, but I only have experience of one ring purchase! Shopping around obviously makes sense, you could also look at having a ring made, similar to what you've already seen.

I'd say 20% would be expecting a lot. I think I got a discount of something like 10% on mine, can't remember completely cos it was 2008, but I remember we were happy with it.

m1ck007 we did this with our wedding rings - the shop held them for us and we paid them over 4 months and then collected them. They actually offered this without us having to ask, and it suited us grand because aside from being able to spread the cost it meant that they were safely in the shop as opposed to keeping them in the house.

As an FYI to other lads and ladies, I got 10% off the listed price. A friend managed to get 20% off by offering cash. The shop we went too weren't able to entertain that option unfortunately.

Still think it would've been a good idea to look around away from such a prominent location but she's happy anyway!
