We did the cliff walk Bray to Greystones this week. On looking down on the tracks I noticed two things that someone might be able to please explain.

There are parallel tracks inside the normal running rails. What are they for ?

I noticed what look like long microphones - for want of a better description - pointing towards and away from some of the tunnel entrances on this section. What are they for ?

The additional rails inside the running rails are to provide stability in the event of a landslide.

What look like long microphones are to detect shock waves, also in the event of rock movement. I do not know the technicalities, but assume that any significant movement would set off an alarm, and result in suspension of rail service pending inspection.

The "long microphones" are yagi antennas to provide GSMR coverage in the tunnels.

The inside rails are to contain a derailment if one should occur. Known as Guard rails or Check Rails.

You would often see them at critical locations on the network.

Strictly speaking they are for the legacy 400Mhz secure radio, additional antennas are being fitted for GSMR
