Tiles - Fired Earth alternatives

    Hi

We've come across a range of fired earth tiles we like (to re-tile a boarder in our kitchen). Of course they are ridiculously priced and way out of our price range (we are normal people with normal incomes :) Small trouble but feeling a bit gutted, the fired earth range is pretty impressive and I'm just wondering what people can recommend as some alternative suppliers

    Thanks

    Have a look in tilestyle.

How many square meters do you need? What sort of budget did you have in mind?

    Approx 3m squared.

Since I posted this I've been doing some thinking and research. The fired earth tile we like is on a cream terracotta base - so thinking about getting some base terracotta tiles and to hand paint them ourselves. We have an artist friend who does some tile\ceramic work so might hit her up. If we go head it wont be a carbon copy of the tile we like but some adaptation of that design. If we're going to the bother of hand painting them ourselves we may aswell make them unique :)

I've ordered a sample from Fired earth, and will go from there.

As always finding the time will be the most difficult part. If this gets off the ground I'll put up some updates.

If anyone has any input on hand painting tiles feel free to post here :)

Hand painting tiles? Unless you have a kiln and the expertise to glaze the tiles I don't think the results will last too well in a kitchen environment or else your costs will be very high. Ask your friend for sure.

Since it is only 3 sq m it might be worth saving up for a few months and getting what you want if you think it will give the effect you want. Or maybe use the plain tiles for part of the area and use the fired earth for a centrepiece.

Any tiling project is expensive once you've factored in the cost of labour, adhesive and grout and mess, even before you think about the price of the actual tiles. So make sure you get what you want.
