I remember when Johnny had his first Eurovision sucess, he came to the Majestic ballroom in Mallow and very few turned up to see him, he broke down in tears on stage, very sad.

In fairness to the man, that must have been soul destroying for him. He has never really been appreciated in Ireland for some reason.

For the past 36 years Johnny's been going around thinking the world owes him a living. In between winning Eurovisions he made poor choices with regard to his career. I expect we'll be watching a similar documentary on the 50th anniversary of his 1980 win.

That was decent enough. Nothing much new but it was an enjoyable hour.

Johnny's high opinion of himself is all part of the charm. I can imagine the arguments where Johnny took on his Dad and The Holy Spirit were lively. Johnny probably felt like his Dad should also call up God The Father and God The Son just to even the teams up a bit.

Nice story about writing Why Me? for his wife, both of the winning Eurovision entries he wrote were lovely songs.

    I like him.
Great Singer but he does come off very arrogant
I think that's why he's had more success in mainland Europe where straight forward is the norm

Interesting that Stig Anderson, who managed ABBA and knew something about building a career from Eurovision, wanted to manage him at one stage.

Came across this very recent video on YouTube this evening from the Norwegian Eurovision Qualifiers, its worth a look.

Johnny nails it. He's totally unappreciated here for some reason unlike Norway as you can see from the comments on the thread

They love him, especially in Germany & Scandinavian countries.
That's why I always think it'd be worth throwing him at eurovision 1 last time. Give him a great song, hey he could even write one himself. We are going to fail again Thursday and that'll make it 3 years not even getting to the final.
Johnny is 63 now, we need to make use of him while his voice is still as good as ever.

Johnny is a Eurovision legend but he's done nothing beyond that to merit
star status in Ireland or beyond. He said on the LLS the other day that he'd just put out his first album with his own songs at 63!. That took a long time and going by the one he sang on the show it's not very good.
I'd be all for him representing Ireland every year at Eurovision. He has that profile and background.
One that rarely makes for chart hits.

That Johnny's always had a great voice is incontrovertible, but his penchant for cheesiness & lack of nous in how he marketed himself meant he wasn't always taken seriously by a more discerning public in Ireland & the UK. As Hasselhof's career proves, cheesy is far from a stumbling block over in continental Europe, but you'll be considered a MOR cabaret performer in Anglosphere markets.

Take a look at the hackneyed moody shots on his website or check out the Spinal-Tap-esque Excalibur musical evening he fronts, for an insight into just how bad things can get.

There are parallels with Colm CT Wilkinson too, in terms of both men lacking the discipline to hold back on the vocal gymnastics at times, though Logan's always struck me as a far more likeable fella.
