So im about to pull the trigger on an order for my new build, and could use some advice on the components below. Mainly the Mobo "ASRock Z170 Extreme4 Skylake ATX Motherboard". I was hoping to spend under 100 euro on one, but then realized i needed one that could read DDR4 ram at 3000 MHz to make use of the ram i was going with (and a mobo thats good for overclocking too), any suggestions or should i just stick with the one in this current build ?

Im only semi knowledgeable on components and builds and the like so if theres any bottlenecks in the build below or anything overkill anywhere please let me know.

    CPU - Intel Core I5-6600K Processor (3.5 GHz, 6 M Cache, LGA1151) - £244.95

    GPU - MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB ARMOR 6G OC V1 Graphics Card - £259.99

    Mobo - ASRock Z170 Extreme4 Skylake ATX Motherboard - £108.46

    RAM - Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz CL15 XMP 2.0 High Performance Desktop Memory Kit - Black - £89.97

    Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler "RR-212E-16PK-R1, 4 Heatpipe, 1x 120mm PWM Fan, Intel / AMD - £29.98

Case - Corsair CC-9011023-WW Carbide Series 200R Compact ATX Performance Computer Case - Black - £56.99

    HDD - WD Blue 2TB Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - £66.76

    DVD Burner - LG GH24NSD0 24 x DVDRW Internal DVD Burner - £16.99

    Termal paste - Arctic Cooling MX-4 4g Thermal Compound - £3.95

    Power supply - EVGA 500 W B1 Series 80+ Bronze PC Power Supply Unit - £56.49

Total £933.56 or 1,095 euro before delivery. I need windows and a new monitor on top of that too, so im gonna have to spend alittle more than the 1200 original budget. What do you guys think of the build ?, and do you think its better to order now or you think the january sales will have any deals worth waiting for ?

No SSD is going to be a massive drag.

    Mobo and RAM seem expensive.

1060 v 480 - not sure of the current debate there but worth looking at.

    Balanced your base down:

i5-6500 instead of 6600K because in-game benchmarks don't seem to mind too much for CPU speeds. Higher RAM speeds have a mild effect, but it's a much cheaper gain.

525Gb MX300 SSD to start you off right.

RX480 4Gb, which is neck-and-neck with the 1060 in many benchmarks, but significantly cheaper.

    Thanks for the advice!

Ok so i've switched out the Mobo to the Gigabyte GA-Z170-Gaming K3. Thats a nice mobo.

I was looking at the 6500k 3.2 first, and almost bought a ram+mobo+cpu bundle from amazon before the christmas. But decided on the 6600k to future proof it for VR gaming ?(do you think the 19% boost in cpu would make much difference to VR as i've read the software will progress so fast ?)

The SSD is definitely something i want in the build eventually, might be able to budget one in from the start along with a 1tb hdd or something like that.

I got the 1060 6gb into my head, and haven't really done too much comparison with AMD stuff with being so used to Nvidia and its good driver support etc over the years. I'll have a proper look at that 480 this evening. Which would be that better card to pick, for maybe going with a sli or crossfire setup later on ?

I personally would take a H110/H170, i7-6700 and stock cooler over a 6600K/Z170/3rd party cooler setup from a raw performance point of view. In games that make use of extra threads, like Battlefield 1 and Fallout 4, the i7 dominates by a significant margin and games are only going to get more CPU heavy.

It's not to say the 6600K isn't fine and especially if you want to mess around with overclocking, but the stripped back i7 build would be my preference every time.

You'd be better off selling the i5 and upgrading to an i7-6700(k) down the road if you find yourself bottlenecked.
Alternatively, buy a Xeon 1231v3 system now, e.g.

Yes it's not DDR4 Skylake, but tbh I doubt you'd find it wanting, and it gives you 4core/8thread gaming right away.

AMD drivers are fine, and I have noticed that their GPUs seem to be supported for longer (they get better than their Nvidia counterparts over time).
Case in point, the 780Ti is now outperformed by the 1050Ti.

Also, I'd ignore SLI / Crossfire. Not only are Nvidia making it a "premium" feature, but you're always better off selling the old GPU & upgrading.

So this is what i went it

    Mobo - Gigabyte GA-Z170-Gaming K3 = £94.99
    GPU - MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6GT OC V1 6GB = £250.49
    CPU - Intel Core i5 6600K 3.5 = £227.88
    RAM - 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX PC4-24000 (3000) = £89.99
    Storage - 2TB Seagate BarraCuda 3.5" HDD = £67.99
    Optical drive - LG GH24NSD0 - 24x DVD-RW SATA 5.25" = £11.99
    Power - 500W EVGA Bronze, 80 PLUS Bronze = £52.99
ARCTIC MX-4 Thermal Compound = £16.99 (ordered the 20g be mistake, messaged scan to try and change order to the 4 gram tube)

I was this close to going with the 480 gaming X from amazon, but in the 2 hours id spent researching and comparing the cards, the price on the 480 gaming x went up over 20 pounds when i logged in and refreshed the page to buy the fooker. It went from "out of stock and available by 7th jan", to in stock and price upped.
..... nearly still went with it but it took me over current available budget.

Next i need a monitor and OS.

Any of you guys know where i can get a good price on Windows 7 ?

Download and install 10, worry about buying it later.

lol. Well i got a "refurb" copy of W7 cheap (40euro) off amazon. I want to give W10 alittle more time to cook. A SSD + W10 upgrade then later this year.

Not an entirely sensible idea tbh.
