Well. Does anyone know what is that bright light above the St James gate area of dublin. Probably further south but it's hard to miss.

It's been there for well over an hour and not the first time it's been there.
    Is it a helicopter??
    Or is it an alien?

If you are looking in a South Westerly direction then it can be the planet Venus. It is exceptionally bright tonight.

'above the St. James Gate area' could be north, south, east or west unless you say where you're looking from.

Dunno man. I'm sure if you looked at the sky in that general direction you would see an abnormally big bright light that's Venus.

Next time I'll give my coordinates and get my angles right.

I've seen what I think the OP is referring to. It's like a searchlight on the clouds. Reminds me of light ceilometer Met E used to have in Dublin (not sure if they still use the searchlight type or laser now).

When the old St. Georges church in Temple St. was used a a venue, they used to have a couple of searchlights chasing each other on the clouds above. Could be another venue doing something similar.

It's Venus. And Mars is above it.

    Hi I'm posting from Greystones

Really bright light close to the moon
    I'd say it's south west.

I thought it might be a plane or helicopter but nothing showing up on flight radar.

    Wonder if it's venus?

Yes, it is Venus it's currently in conjunction with the Moon. Later this imonth you will be able to see both Venus and Mars in conjunction with the full Moon.

Personally I won't be getting too excited to see this wonderful spectical. Because with most thing associated with astronomy in Ireland, the bloody clouds will roll in a block the view.

You can see Mars tonight, up above and to the left of the moon, a lot less visible than Venus but it is there.
