Removing the oil filter: performing an oil change

    Hi all,

I have a 2006 Ford Focus Tdci 1.6 diesel. I am attempting to change the oil and replace the filter.

I have removed all the old oil from the engine using a suction gizmo.

The problem I am having is removing the oil filter itself. Unlike other cars, the oil filter is not a spin-on cannester that can be easily replaced underneath the car. It is a plain filter that goes into the oil filter housing under the bonnet.

So far, I have remove the air filter housing (to replace the air filter after I change the oil filter) and have removed the air intake valves for relatively easy access to the oil filter housing.

The oil filter housing has a single black 27mm nut on the top of it. The bolt has written on it 25nM and an arrow pointing in the clockwise direction.

Now...my question is this....with this bolt, to loosen it, do I turn the bolt in the regular anti-clockwise direction to loosen it?

Up to now I always understood, anti-clockwise to loosen, clockwise to tighten. But the arrow on the bolt itself has put me off that. The last thing I wanted to do was take a chance in turning it and cracking the filter housing.

In addition to that, I have heard that there exists another 10mm bolt that has to be removed in order to take out the old filter. Is this correct? What is this bolt and where is it?

I have no idea of car maintenance really, so am unfamiliar with most things car-wise, so would appreciate a simplified explanation. I have read a very short piece online that the bolt is related in some way to the "intercooler" or something.

    Can anyone please help?

    Thanks.

    PB

Have changed the same filters on bmws and vw's and they are always anticlockwise to loosen. Never heard of another bolt to remove the filter...............

This video doesnt show anything about it, seems like a simple case of whipping out the old one, change the seals and bang the cap back on?

There's a little "nipple" on the bottom of that oil filter. It's critically important that it goes into the correct spot in the lower housing.

As the last poster has said, you turn the head of the oil filter housing anti clockwise to remove and tighten to the torque specified.

That wont drain the oil completely on a focus.
