My 2004 vw golf just turned 200,000 miles on Christmas day. It's a 1.4 petrol with 75hp. Could that possibly be a record for that engine in these climes, or do you know of higher miles on these engines?

The actual engine has never given any issues. Serviced every 10k miles with fully synth 5w30 along with fresh filters and plugs.

Apart from that it's had a new clitch, second hand gearbox, new fuel pump, reconditioned altinator, couple of coil packs, exaust parts, lots of suspension and brake parts.

    Is it a Mk4 or Mk5?

    320,000km is pretty good.

With a car of that mileage it eventually starts to be a parallel of triggers broom.

A lad in work has an Octavia 2005 same engine he has had it from new 340k km on it and its on original clutch, gearbox and engine. Actually he has spent fcuk all on it a accelerator pedal position sensor went possibly a few coilpacks but no big mechanical jobs it's been cheap motoring for him.

My Octavia with same engine had a hard life and at 140,000 miles it's pretty rattly.

Those engines aren't designed to last and use abit of oil

It's a mk5. Uses a bit of oil alright. No harm once it's looked after. Have it from new. As I say no actual engine issues so far. Fogot to add the 3 timing belts to the maintenance.

    Nice achievement :)
Do you mind me asking, was it the plan when buying it to keep it and lash the miles on?

No. I don't think I'd have kept it as long, but just kept it going as it wasn't giving trouble.

I guess it proves that the correct oil can help even the softest of engines last.

    Triggers broom is right.

It's a nice achievment and evidence that that 1.4 has some redeeming features if you treat it with care but I would have the mindset with pretty much any car that I would like things like the gearbox and fuel pump to last indefinitely.

Those are fairly critical components to be failing, especially from such a highly regarded manufacturer.

Post some pics of the car!

A fuel pump for a petrol engine failing is neither uncommon or expensive to be fair :)

Replacing one once over 200k miles / 13 years is quite acceptable.

    Quite true.

Whether it's acceptable or not is where our opinions differ. A failure like that would **** me off if it happened to me.

Have a 2000 Octavia 1.6AKL petrol with 287,000 miles original clutch, no engine work done, did the fuel pump this year, just the usual consumables rebuilt the alternator twice. Cost of insurance retired it this year, over 15 yrs old, mechanically sound, body and paint showing its age.

It would p me off too but after considering the bath tub curve, manufacturing tolerances, price and ease of replacement etc etc etc I'd consider it acceptable if I was after knocking a decade + of service out of the original one.

If you would deem such a failure unacceptable than your only option would be to drive vehicles that are under warranty, even at that a fuel pump might still fail :)

My Wife has a Jan 2005 Ford Focus II 1.4. We bought it in Sept '08 with around 80k kms. 1st thing I did when I got it home was give it a full service with fully synt oil etc. It's been serviced every 10k kms since and currently has 335,000 kms done. Last Feb it got a new alternator and in Aug it got a new clutch. Apart from a starter 2 years ago it's just needed new pads/shoes and the front bushings/shocks and both rear wheel bearings. Everything else is still original. It pays to look after a car imo!

Good going alright. Wheel bearings going?

    Are they a known issue?

Update. One year on and our 2004 mk5 1.4 golf hit the 220k mile mark just before Christmas. Again the engine has been fine this last year bar a couple of coil packs. The rest of the car isn't fairing as well. Rear window stuck and falls down a little. Front electric window stuck down a couple of times, have it up now and it is staying that way.lol. Sore on suspension parts, but the s***t Donegal roads could well be to blame for that. Sore is disks, living close to salt water the culprit.

All in all it's been a good servant for the 13 years we've had it. Now it's time to change. Probably go for something in the same class. What to go for is the big question. Have a rough shortlist of new model Leon, i30, ceed, new model Octavia, Focus, Civic. Budget is about 10k, looking at 2012-2014. 20k annual mileage suggests diesel. New model Leon looks nice and seems good value. Looking for something reliable, as may well keep it a few years.

Great to hear it survived without much issue for another 20,000 miles. Always love seeing cars used to their fullest. It doesn't owe you anything at this point.

Best of luck with the new car purchase, you might want to start a new thread in the buying section:

To be fair the suspension and Brake parts are wear items so every car will need them replaced after a period small enough issues considering mileage and age. Probably makes sense to upgrade now you've got your moneys worth out of it. I have a new model Leon 1.4 TSI so if you have any questions about them ask away. They are a lot of car for the money especially secondhand as they are priced reasonably enough.

Yeah great aul car. I had 2 corollas and a mk4 golf before that. Never had much trouble with them either. Service them and keep them in good repair, that's the key.

When I bought this golf new I thought it would last me 20 plus years and it may well have!

But in the meantime I got married and between my wife running around with work and dropping the kids here and there, the aul Golf was never if the road. I kept up the servicing and maintenance on it. But as the miles piled on we just kept on testing it for another year. You know the scenario well.

If I was still driving it myself at average mileage would it gave made 20 years. We'll never know!

I've asked on the buying section before about a replacement and then tested the golf again. Funny how as the years pass your budget goes into the newer models.

Yeah, agree these are wear and tear items. Not complaining bout them.

Yeah the 1.4 tsi or 1.2 tsi interest me. Not sure if the 1.6 tsi would suit the 20k miles per annum better. How do you find the tsi on juice and in general. Is it belt driven now?

I like the looks of the Leon over the Golf. Octavia looks a decent option too.
