Hi. Why do some road routes have 2 tolls and other don't. (Ignore m50 stuff)

e.g. If I drive from Dublin to Waterford, there are no tolls.
Then if I drive from Dublin to Galway there are 2 bloody tolls.

I k ow the Galway road is a bit longer, but why does it have 2 tolls versus 0 for Waterford.

They were built as PPP (Public Private partnership) projects. Private companies build the roads and are given permission to toll those road for a set amount of years as a way to recoup costs.

It may be down to the fact that the minister for transport at the time the Waterford road was being built happened to be a Waterford TD....

It was considered at the time that the M9 would not be busy enough to warrant a toll ( in which case why build it at all)
Anyway it's busy now and getting busier.

The M9 is as busy and busier than much of the other MIUs now. It's been a resounding success and such a boon to the south east. The sections north of Carlow in particular. We have enough tolls in this country, I don't see the need for another along with all the other taxes we are screwed for. There is one at the end of the M9 on the Waterford bypass.

why didnt one of these companies toll the Waterford road ?

And not that I'm giving out about the Waterford road etc. Just seems unfair/strange that Galway has 2 and Waterford has 0.

The Naas bypass - now the N7, was to be tolled but the politicians chickened out.

Some motorways that are PPP are not tolled.

Waterford has one on its bypass though, at the end of the M9. Galway will soon have the M17/18 toll free. I wouldn't be surprised to see one close to kilcullen on the M9 but it's a little like water charges...people get used to "free" so politically it would be very hard.
Also the old N9 (R446) was a lot worse than the equivalent N6 which preceded the motorway and wouldn't be very desirable or safe for people avoiding a toll.

The old PPPs were built as hard tolled schemes: M1, M3, M4 Kilcock-Enfield-Kinnegad, M6 Galway-Ballinasloe, M7/M8, M8 Fermoy/Rathcormac BP, N18 Limerick BP, N25 Waterford BP and of course the worst two of them all, the Westlink/Eastlink. The toll on the Port Tunnel exists purely as a congestion charge to discourage commuting through the tunnel.

These days, the terms in PPP contracts have been changed and the PPP concessionaires will now be paid back by the Government rather than a hard toll being placed on the road. This applies to the following 4 PPPs:

    N7 Newlands Cross/M11 Arklow-Rathnew
    M17/M18 Gort - Tuam
    M11 Gorey - Enniscorthy
    N25 New Ross Bypass.

These would've been tolled previously but won't be. For some of them (M17/M18) a hard toll wouldn't be viable anyway (like the Waterford BP)
