Painting. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help. Seriously!! I'm stuck here.

First off I suck at DIY of any sorts. Anyway, I noticed a hairline crack in the kitchen wall that runs the entire height of the wall and the paint was chipping away.

So, I got a swatch chart and chose the colour that seemed to match (2nd hand house) and was praying that I could get away with just touching up the troubled area, but got it wrong.
So after sanding down the crack I put some Ronseal smooth finish filler on it and waited for a day and then started painting the entire wall.

It's a very big wall and I'm just finished it and was all happy with myself until I noticed that the cracked area has now started completely pealing.
You can lift it off with your fingers.

So what did I do wrong? Why is it pealing? I couldnt get much off when sanding it when dry so why is it pealing after painting?

Basically I've just spent 45 quid on 5 litres of paint and 4 hours painting an entire wall only to find that the little piece I was trying to fix is worse than before. :(

It it's any help the crack runs directly alongside the door to the sunroom and its about 2 inches from a radiator. Wooden floor beneath.

Very frustrated. Wish I just left the crack alone now

    .... Ronseal smooth finish filler.....

Does that specify a primer to be used pre painting?
Sounds like a primer or undercoat is/was required.

Doesn't seem to mention it, though it says "build up layers". I didn't do that but it was hairline.

(my auld pal from the Liverpool forum!) :)

Sounds like the paint isn't sticking to the filler. Maybe some sanding dust residue? Hard to know.

thanks. Yeah it's hard to explain but there are huge chunks coming off that I didnt even touch with the filler.

The paint seems to have made all the area around the original crack start to peal.

So I'm guessing it's not really about the filler. More to do with the original problem that caused the crack. But the paint seems to have really annoyed it.

Fingers crossed some sanding dust just got on the areas you are now seeing peeling :)

Would the wall be damp? Myself and my daughter painted my hall. The paint kept bubbling and when I touched it it was completely peeled.

Never thought of that. I don't know. There's a radiator directly next to it.
Would that make it more or less likely to get damp?

I'm useless at these kinda things :(

PS - other side of wall (in sunroom looks fine)

Mine was in the hall and I have a house either side so I don't know how it could be damp but that's what Google said

Ha yeah I was just reading similar on google. Like you, I'm also stumped coz here really shouldnt be any dampness

    God I hate painting

The likelihood is that you'll have to put a bonder/primer on the wall first..

Or buy a big picture in IKEA to cover the crack...

Primer so. :) Just curious, why does that part of the wall need a primer when the rest didnt?

How do people know these things?
