    Hi all,

    I'm considering buying an '08 A4 with the 3.0 TDI V6 lump :)

It's a 6 Speed Manual as opposed to the Multitronic (CVT) Auto.

Would love to hear your thoughts / opinions of these.. particularly if you have any experience or have owned a car with this engine before!

    Thanks :)

The only Auto boxes available in quattro are either Tip tronic or S tronic - Multitronic is a FWD only gear box. The quattro auto boxes don't seem to be as troublesome as the multitronic of the day.

If it was me i'd go Auto all the way.

Thanks, didn't know that but the specific car I'm looking at is a manual and is my personal preference over an Auto.

Any thoughts on the engine? From what I've read they're pretty solid and don't give too much trouble.. pokey too

The motors on the inlet manifold flaps give trouble i think. The are a pokey engine alright but not that economical when driven on (like all large diesels) I only have experience of actually driving one in an A6 and Auto would definitely be my preference (personal opinion)

Auto and diesel are so well suited to each other.

I have heard of that generation A4 that the pedals are offset or something in the manuals? Another reason to go for the auto!

I actually drove an A6 3.0 TDI about a year or two ago (it was Auto) and remember being really impressed by how smooth and powerful the engine was (I think it was remapped though)

It'll be a family car and the mrs will be driving it too, she has never driven Auto and doesn't want to either so the Auto is definitely a no go. (I also don't want to risk her mistaking a Brake pedal for a Clutch :D )

I was doing a bit more research on these today, I was under the impression it was a Haldex based Quattro system but apparently it's Torsen based permanent 4wd which was a nice surprise.

I assume these have a DPF? Are they know to give trouble? .. I like the thought of a DPF / EGR delete + Remap at some stage too

All the bigger Audi quattro cars are Torsen apart from the R8.

To be honest it makes zero difference in terms of the 4wd performance, i've had 3 Haldex cars and 2 Torsen cars)

In terms of buying though it's one less thing to worry about, one less thing to check for a service history in. If you buy one with anything over 70/80k though i would still be doing a rear diff oil change for peace of mind.

Maybe it only applies to rhd models but I found the offset very annoying. Physically uncomfortable but also the frustration of something as important as driving position being poor despite the obvious effort put into other less important things.

I definitely plan on changing the diff and gearbox oil, I do it on nearly every car I own just for peace of mind and for the warm and fuzzy feeling of knowing it has fresh oil :D

I took a B8 for a spin yesterday just to get a feel for this shape of A4 (it was 120bhp paddy spec with a casio watch 1980's DIS  )

Pedals seemed fine to me  only cars I've ever noticed with strange pedal positioning came from Italy

What would that signify? .. should I look out for this when engine is warm / cold ?

Thanks for this, will definitely look out for this.

I didn't know timing chain issues were common on this engine.

Hopefully not to the same extent as BMW's N47 / N57
