My Contract states that my probation period is 12 months

Is it possible for my employer to reduce this to 6 months even though my contract states 12 months?

He said he would be company lawyer said that contract states 12 months and legally they cant reduce it to 6 months if they wanted to

If both parties agree, then legally yes they can.

But it sounds like your company doesn't agree. They're leaving their a**es as covered as they can, and Irish labour law allows them to do this.

but if they wanted to they could?  The managing director said she has no problem reducing my probation to 6 months (applying for a mortgage) but it was the company lawyer who said that my contract says 12 months so they cant fill in the form for 6 months even if they wanted to reduce my probation period as they legally cant..

But you have said if both parties agree, than legally yes
