Travel Insurance for a 'Sun' Holiday

Intend on heading to Costa Blanca for Summer Holiday in July or August.Flights will be dear enough as it's peak season.

Couple with two children 6 and 3 year olds.

Will probably head for a fortnight with Ryanair.
Was half thinking of not bothering with Travel Insurance as we will be booking accommodation that includes airport transfers in deal.
My thinking was that as it's a direct flight to Alicante and the same home the chances of baggage going missing are slim to nil.

Or should I err on side of caution for peace of mind and go with Insurance??

    Really appreciate anyone's opinions.

Ps- always got Insurance any other time I travelled.

It depends on your reason for getting insurance.

Im not sure why you think the reasons for getting insurance is different when you book it not as a package deal .

I always get insurance in order to be covered if someone got sick or broke a leg and we couldn't travel.
If you have paid out a lot of money for the trip, a few quid to insure against that always gives me peace of mind,

With a young family, I'd be more concerned about having travel insurance if someone got sick. Reciprocal healthcare will only cover so much.

Even decent travel insurance as a percentage of the overall cost of your holiday will be about maybe 3% or 4%, you'd be foolish not to purchase

We all hope to never use it but if a flight gets cancelled, a relative dies, you fall ill or one of the kids gets ill, you lose your spending money etc etc etc you'll be glad you had it

16 years ago, a relative of mine had a heart attack while on holidays in Lanzarote, 55k for the air ambulance home, they were glad the insurance cover was in place

It's definitely one of those things that it's better to have and not need than to need and not have.

There's a lot more to travel insurance than just covering lost baggage. While your EHIC will cover some medical care, it won't cover a medical evacuation if needed, nor will it cover the expense of having to stay on at your resort beyond the dates of your holiday should someone fall ill or get injured. You could be looking at thousands of euro in expenses out of your own pocket.

It also covers having to cancel for various reasons, which bailed my folks out once where they would have lost a holiday of over €3,000. For the sake of €80 for a half decent insurance package, you'd be silly not to!

The cost of an air ambulance to bring someone home or the cost of other members of your family having to stay in the country while another receives medical attention would be my primary reasons to get travel insurance rather than cover for lost baggage which will be automatically covered to a degree by your airline anyway.

The EHIC works fine to cover actual medical care in another EU country but will not cover costs to get the patient and their family home or costs if the injured party needs to remain in the country for some time to recover outside the care of a hospital.

It's unlikely that a €50 policy is going to provide the same cover as a €100 policy so look at a few policies and decide what your cover requirements are

If you google travel insurance Ireland you should come across a travel insurance comparison site which will compare different policy details & prices

Purchase once you buy you flights

Thanks, when you say purchase once you buy flights do you mean anytime after you book flights?

If you buy your flights today but don't buy insurance until May and for some reason have to cancel your trip in April, your flight costs obviously wouldn't be covered because you don't have a policy in place, I usually buy insurance same day as booking flights
