Not really. That's all they go for, people don't like paying the tax bill. I'd call it a good deal, rather than too cheap. Wouldn't be expecting to haggle much off though.

It's a nearly 11 year old petrol car with a tax rate that most Irish don't want to pay, and 175k miles on the clock so the price is about right. Just make sure that there are no issues with the gearbox as it's not unheard of a gearbox bearing failing on those. BTW the guy selling it a dealer of some sorts with 15 other cars for sale on DD.

Cheers, I'll have a look at it tomorrow.

    While I'm here, worth it?

I'd go with the Avensis, better spec and you can use the grand or so savings to blow at Christmas :D

That's the 8 valve 1.6 from before the war. I'd get the Avensis

To cheap or not too cheap - that is the question

FYI, someone I know didn't have a great experience with that 'dealer'.

Not to say those cars aren't OK, he tends to deal in UK imports at around 80k miles so the cars you are looking at are probably trade ins.

Which dealer, the avensis or VW? If you're talking about the V W one i know a fair few people who have used him with no issues. He does do a lot of ex fleet cars from the UK but he's upfront about it, he has a huge turn over in stock so someone being disappointed is bound to happen.

The Avensis is much better value and has a much better engine, although I'm curious as to how the NCT is valid until July with that registration? It should have been registered very early in January with such a low number.

Other than that, it looks well and those cars are very reliable and are capable of big mileage, I drove one with 189,000 miles or 303,000 km on the clock today and apart from it needing a new wheel bearing it drives like a car with half that mileage.

The only thing that's really against it is the tow hitch, but it's a Toyota so it wouldn't put me off if the car has some sort of service history and drives well.

I wonder is the mileage on that Avensis 175k km rather than miles (so then it would only have 109,000 miles, which is barely run in for one of those cars), the odometer can't show miles if the clocks are in kms (the VW can show miles or km regardless of what the clocks are in if it's got a trip computer and the upgraded instrument binnacle).

The main thing to watch out for with both cars is the gearbox, they're a bit soft in both cars, the bearings are a weakness in the Toyota, if you can hear a change in sound when you depress the clutch then you know the bearings are on the way out. The Toyota can be prone to oil burning so I'd be looking carefully at the NCT reports and giving the car a bit of welly on the test drive to see how bad the problem is. If they start burning oil then put some 10W40 into it, it's a Toyota approved grade (though 5W30 is what they're supposed to run on ideally) and that should help keep oil consumption at bay. Mind you, a 2006 car should not have a problem with oil usage - it was mainly the earlier VVTis (2003 and earlier) that were fond of a drop of oil really.

The nct disc says 17xxxxkm by the looks of it. Tested in 07/16

Voluntary early testing maybe? Also the bearing is most likely to be noisy driving in 5th at 45 mph and upwards. A noise when depressing the clutch could be just the clutch release bearing.
